Matthias Church in Budapest: the most beautiful church!
Matthias Church is located on the Buda hill and overlooks the city. This enchanting building, together with the Fisherman’s Bastion at its back, crates a „fairy tale” atmosphere. The beautiful and colourful roof is made of Hungarian majolica and makes the church unique.
The Church is Catholic. It was originally built in the 12th century and it had a troubled history. It was a mosque for many years until it was reconverted into a Catholic church. In the nineteenth century it got the actual and beautiful neo-Gothic architectural style.
Franz Joseph and Sisi were crowned in this Church in 1867 as King and Queen of Hungary. It is worth entering to visit the interior with its characteristic frescoes that make the atmosphere unique.

- How to reach: is located on the Buda hill. You can reach it by foot: after crossing the chain bridge take one of the small streets on the right that go up to the hill. ………..questa…………. You can also use the public transport: bus 16 from Deak square (near the Budapest’s Eye) or from Szell Kalman square in Buda – where the red metro also stops- is very convenient.
- Opening hours: usually the Church is open from Monday to Friday from 9AM to 5PM. On Saturdays from 9AM to Midday. On Sundays from 1 PM to 5PM. The opening hours may vary so we recommend consulting the Church’s website. Click here.
- Ticket price: you can buy tickets directly on site, you don’t need to book them in advance. Adults 1,800 HUF (around 6 euros), Students and pensioners 1,200 HUF (around 4 euros), free under 6 years, family (2 adults + one student) 4,200 HUF (around 13 euros).
- Bell tower: You can take a combined ticket to visit the bell tower. The visit has to be done in groups and it starts every hour. The cost of the ticket is the same of the cost of the Church.
